Homework Policy for This Year

This year I am going to experiment with a ‘no homework policy.’ Research shows that homework at the elementary school level is not effective in helping students succeed in the classroom. Instead, I encourage you to read with your child every night, spend time with your family, converse with your child about school, eat dinner together, and get a good night’s rest. Research DOES show that reading with your child every night can make a huge difference. This can be anything- the books/readers that I send home weekly, library books, bible stories, articles, magazines, etc.
If you still would like to work on things that we are learning in the classroom, you can find what we are covering each week on my weekly newsletter (in red folder on Monday’s or on classroom blog). Additionally, each nine weeks I will send home a list of standards and skills that will be tested on the report card. Your child will be responsible for knowing everything on that sheet!
Lastly, beginning in September I will be sending home an optional STEM challenge that you can work on with your child at home. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to work collaboratively on a project! Again, this will be optional- you can do it every month, some months, or no months at all.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about this new policy.

  • We went to library today. The book that your child checked out today is not due until next Monday. You can keep it at home until then if you would like! If you forgot to send your child's book today, you can send it any day this week and I will let them take it back to the library and get a new book.
  • The News Courier will be coming to photograph every kindergarten class at Creekside THIS FRIDAY! Please fill out and return the permission form/about your child form ASAP. If you do not return this, then your child will not be able to be in the picture.

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend! A few announcements and reminders:

-Tomorrow EVERYONE will begin coming to school (boys and girls).
-The bell to come to class rings at 7:20am. The tardy bell rings at 7:35am, and this is when your child should be in our classroom.
-Free lunch for everyone in the lunchroom if they want it. The buses get here in plenty of time to go to the lunchroom for breakfast, or you can drop your child off at the lunchroom side carline before 7:30am and they can go by the lunchroom for breakfast.
-Fall DIBELS testing began today. The only part that we administer for the Fall is Letter Naming Fluency. More info to come on this!
-This is the last week that you can walk your child into the building.

I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all of you parents because I have received 100% of forms and supply money! Thank you for being so great to fill all of those forms out for me! :)

If you ever have any questions concerning your child, please let me know. I want us to work together as a team to ensure that your child has the best kindergarten experience possible and that they are ready and prepared to go to first grade in May!
