Homework Policy for This Year

This year I am going to experiment with a ‘no homework policy.’ Research shows that homework at the elementary school level is not effective in helping students succeed in the classroom. Instead, I encourage you to read with your child every night, spend time with your family, converse with your child about school, eat dinner together, and get a good night’s rest. Research DOES show that reading with your child every night can make a huge difference. This can be anything- the books/readers that I send home weekly, library books, bible stories, articles, magazines, etc.
If you still would like to work on things that we are learning in the classroom, you can find what we are covering each week on my weekly newsletter (in red folder on Monday’s or on classroom blog). Additionally, each nine weeks I will send home a list of standards and skills that will be tested on the report card. Your child will be responsible for knowing everything on that sheet!
Lastly, beginning in September I will be sending home an optional STEM challenge that you can work on with your child at home. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to work collaboratively on a project! Again, this will be optional- you can do it every month, some months, or no months at all.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about this new policy.
